El Epitafio de Seikilos. The Epitaph of Seikilos.
A marble column almost two thousand years old holds the oldest complete song we know: the words, the melody and the rhythm. Here it plays in the Score demo, with its Greek lyrics tied to each note and the translation below.

Seikilos la manda grabarSeikilos has it carved
In Tralles, in Asia Minor (today Aydın, Turkey), a man named Seikilos has a poem, a song with its musical signs and a dedication to Euterpe carved on a small column. She may be his wife; she may be the muse of music. We do not know.

El ferrocarril y la macetaThe railway and the flowerpot
It is found while the railway is being built. Edward Purser, an engineer, takes it home and has its base sawn flat so it can hold one of his wife's flowerpots. The cut destroys the last line, known today only from an earlier rubbing.

Mientras vivas, brilla. While you live, shine.
Above the song, the stone speaks of itself: “I am an image of stone. Seikilos placed me here, a lasting sign of a memory that does not die.” Above each syllable of the text stand the letters of Greek vocal notation, which give the pitch, and signs that give how long it lasts.

arr. M. Maurano · ClaudeEl modo y la afinaciónMode and tuning
Many transcriptions write it with two sharps. Here it goes down a tone and sits in the Greek Phrygian mode on D, with no accidentals. It sounds in Pythagorean tuning, the tuning of the Greek theorists: pure fifths, as the Keyboard computes them.
In 6/8 at 72, with a repeat. At the end of the pass the last quarter note splits into two eighths so every syllable has its note, and a final tied bar closes the piece. Two voices: the melody, like an aulos, and a drone, like a kithara.
Each Greek syllable is tied to its note: it moves with it, lights up with it and is not lost in the repeat. The translation runs in two lines below the system. This is how you can write the lyrics of your own works.
The same story told in colourful pictures —the train, the flowerpot, the journey— and at the end the song: it plays and the syllables light up on the column. To show in class or send to students.
