In Tralles, a Greek city in what is now Turkey, lived a man called Seikilos. He loved music and poetry.

Seikilos graba su canciónSeikilos carves his song

Seikilos had his song carved on a small marble column. Above each syllable he put a letter that tells you which note to sing. That way his song would never be lost!

He dedicated it to Euterpe: maybe his wife, maybe the muse of music.

¡Llega el tren! Here comes the train!

Mientras cavaban… ¡encontraron la columna de Seikilos! Many centuries later, workers were building a railway near Tralles. While they were digging… they found Seikilos's column!

La columna macetaThe flowerpot column

¡Una columna para las flores!A column for flowers!

An engineer, Edward Purser, took the column home. He had the bottom cut off so it would stand straight and his wife could put a flowerpot on top.

With that cut, the last line written on the stone was lost!

¡Fuego! Un viaje muy largoFire! A very long trip

In 1922 there was a great fire in the city of Smyrna, where the column was. To save it, the Dutch consul took it far away: to Istanbul, to Stockholm and finally to The Hague.

For more than forty years, almost nobody knew where it was.
